For Elias, social habitus can be understood as “the soil from which grow the personal characteristics through which an individual differs from other members of his society” (Elias, 1991:p.182). In this sense, Elias uses the notion of social habitus to present a view of social life that allows for agency and choice but within circumstances not of individuals’ making.
