Unilever’s Lipton Jebel Ali (LJA) factory is the first manufacturing facility in the Middle East to be awarded the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) status at the Bronze level. On the one hand, Lipton had solid experience in integrating sustainability into tea production. Lipton’s tea estates in Kericho (Kenya) and Mufindi (Tanzania) fully complied with Unilever’s standards of sustainable agriculture (refer to Exhibit 5 for a brief view of Unilever’s sustainable agriculture initiatives). Unilever built the Lipton Tea factory at Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai which commenced its operations in the year 1998. Since the establishment of this factory in Dubai, the facility has grown to become a leading tea production plant in the East, as well as the second-largest Unilever tea production plant globally. Lipton has deep roots in the tea culture of the Gulf States and has been sold in the region through agents as far back as the 1930s. Recognising the importance of the tea market in the Arabian Gulf, Unilever set up the first fully-automated tea factory in 1998 in Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai.
